Becca's Closet Gives Dresses for Prom WSVN -- A local organization makes it possible for high school girls to attend important school events, regardless of their finances.
Jay and Pam Kirtman lost their daughter, Rebecca, six-and-a-half years ago. Rebecca Kirtman, a student at Nova High School, was traveling on I-595 on Aug. 20, 2003, when she became involved in a fatal accident.
Jay Kirtman explained how the charity, named after Rebecca, began. "Becca's Closet was started by our daughter, Rebecca, when she was a freshman in high school, he said. "It was originally called the Nova Dress Bank, because she didn't want her name attached to it. Rebecca gave away over 250 dresses in Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties by herself during her sophomore year."
Becca's parents and volunteers continued her dream of helping girls find the perfect dress for prom or military balls through the non-profit organization. Pam Kirtman said, "We've booked appointments, and we're seeing the girls for appointments now, giving them dresses, shoes, accessories: whatever they need for a military ball and prom."
Ariel Kendall, a Becca's Closet volunteer, expressed how glad she was to help. "The faces on the girls when they get a dress are so priceless, and I just enjoy helping them out," she said.
Amanda Marley received a dress from Becca's Closet. "I have a chance to go to my prom with my friends and have a good time and look good, too," she mentioned.
The organization also offered college scholarships for high school students who are community-service-oriented. "The deadline is April 12. It's for high school seniors who want to go on to further their education."
High school students interested in receiving a dress from Becca's Closet must contact the organization and make an appointment to get fitted for a dress. They must also bring a high school ID.
Becca's Closet expanded to 31 states and collected 80,000 formal gowns.
